New Jersey Set To Adopt California Auto Standards: Joins Massachusetts, New York, California And Vermont In Addressing Tougher Air Pollution Standards For New Cars

As the new home of RIPIRG's environmental work, Environment Rhode Island can be contacted regarding this news release.

Both houses of the New Jersey state legislature voted on January 12, 2004 to adopt strict California's strict auto emission standards. New Jersey is now poised to join the growing number of Northeast states who have opted to enforce California's strict auto emission standards, which reduce air pollution and increase consumer access to super low and zero emission vehicles. Massachusetts, New York and Vermont have already adopted the standard, which is also being considered in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

It is a big step forward for New Jersey to join our regional allies in reducing air pollution.

RIPIRG is working in Rhode Island with a coalition of public health, child advocates and environmental groups to bring the California standards to Rhode Island. Governor Carcieri has the administrative ability to act, due to the fact that air throughout the state fails to meet national air quality standards. The California standard has the potential to reduce toxic air emissions and smog forming pollution by up to 30 percent.

None of the air in Rhode Island meets minimum federal air quality standards, and that is a problem we need to fix. If we are going to reduce air pollution in Rhode Island we need to clean up our cars.

RIPIRG is a non-profit, non partisan public interest advocacy organization with over 1,000 members throughout the state.
