PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island environmental group says it's settled a lawsuit against the town of Middletown over sewage and stormwater discharge that polluted beaches.

The proposed settlement announced Wednesday requires a judge's approval.

The settlement requires Middletown to enact a plan to end sewage overflow and discharges of pollution into Easton's Bay. The town will pay penalties if it fails to comply with the terms of the settlement.

The lawsuit was brought by Environment Rhode Island and four local residents.

A separate lawsuit against the city of Newport is pending.
