PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Gov. Don Carcieri on Friday asked the Public Utilities Commission to reject a 24 percent rate increase requested by Narragansett Electric, saying the commission should wait until the end of hurricane season before deciding on a rate hike.

Senate President Joseph Montalbano introduced four energy-related bills yesterday that he said will spark development of small-scale renewable-energy projects in Rhode Island’s city and towns, foster private investment in large-scale wind and solar projects, stabilize electricity prices, and at the same time, spur economic development within the state.

Rhode Island was one of seven states last week to be given Gold Stars by Environment America, a federation of advocacy groups from 27 states formed earlier this year. In a report called America’s Clean Energy Stars: State Actions Leading America to a New Energy Future, the group praised Rhode Island for adopting “bold policies” and adopting at least four of five cutting-edge policy initiatives examined by the report.

Carcieri Wants 3-Member PUC - Providence Journal (new window)

Governor Carcieri has proposed shrinking the Public Utilities Commission to three members from five. Assuming the General Assembly goes along with the proposal, it shouldn’t be hard to implement. That’s because the PUC never had five members, even though state law has required it for the past four years.
